Bloating, Stiffness of the spine and hips? How are they connected and what to do about it.

Why is it that some days my feet feel farther away?
Just yesterday I slid my socks on so successfully I forgot to notice the blessing of healthy mobility. But today...there's this new belly in the way; there's a cramping, pinching in my hips that makes me certain my psoas seems to have shortened by at least 3 inches; and my once supple spinal fluid seems to have frozen in the night.
It wasn't until my thirties that I realized the distance from my hands to my feet could change so dramatically after a single sleep - after a single meal!
But, what could this swollen belly, locked up hips, and stoney spine have in common? And what can I do about it?
After many years of watching my body change I've noticed a few important things:
1. If I'm feeling stiffer, or less flexible, then that means my detoxing pathways are sluggish.
2. If my stomach feels bloated, swollen, or even hard, then I'm carrying inflammation in my intestines.
3. If hips are tight, then something is disturbing the circulation of blood and nerve signaling throughout my digestion.
What I've learned to do in these moments is make simple changes:
1. I introduce more leafy greens into my diet for the next few days until this symptoms leave.
2. I up my water intake greatly.
3. I lower or even eliminate my carbohydrate intake for at least 24 hours.
Sometimes the symptoms start in the spine, sometimes they start with bloating, and other times they start in my hips - but, no matter where they start, they always end up bringing with them each of the other symptoms. It is often slow at first, and if I'm distracted from the discipline of paying attention to my body, then I finally wake up to my inflammation when I can no longer put on my socks without a grunt.
What was once insulting to my ego's flexibility is now more worthy of gratitude and laughter. My body is just talking to me, giving me a clear message that homeostasis is the other direction.
So, if you suffer from bloating, stiffness in your hips or spine, pain in the joints of your hands and feet, then consider getting more greens into your day to day. Some of the most powerful greens (and friends) to add in to your diet to alleviate stiffness and bloating are ones that are not as common in the grocery:
- Dandelion Leaf
- Nettle Leaf
- Moringa
- Shilajit
- Medicinal Mushrooms
Dandelion and Nettle are natural diuretics and liver tonics, helping to open and tone your detox pathways, making sure you are getting no longer useful energy out of your cells, quickly and efficiently. Along with Moringa, they also provide your microbiome with good fiber, genetic, and molecular material that will nourish your cells.
Shilajit is a biochemical miracle that will provide you with vital minerals that will augment your ability to detox your tissues and tone your nervous system.
Medicinal mushrooms like Reishi, Chaga, Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, and more, will boost your immune system, and correct and circulation issues you're having at the blood and nerve level. Finally they will augment your immune system giving you the leverage you need to recover quickly from injury, inflammation, and illness.
